- Contracting out means workers will be required to clean more than twice their current workload in the same amount of time for the same pay. This means lower standards of safety and hygiene, and dirty, unsafe schools.
- School cleaning and maintenance workers should be responsible to their local principals and their local school communities. Bringing in private contractors adds an extra layer of bureaucracy and means that local schools lose control of their own cleaning and maintenance.
- Contracting out compromises kids’ safety. Cleaning and maintenance workers will not be on the grounds when kids are arriving and leaving school – meaning the grounds are less secure.
- Contracting out puts workers’ pay and conditions at risk. As pay and jobs are slashed, and workloads are increased, workers lose motivation and the ability to do the best possible job. School maintenance and cleaning staff want to do the best job possible, but contracting out makes this impossible.
- In other states, contracting out school cleaning and maintenance has led to contracting out in other areas. Contracting out affects the jobs of administration workers, teachers’ aides, and others. We need to take a stand now before private companies move in to make a profit off our state schools.
